Abstract
Abstract A four population model of anaerobic degradation of carbohydrates is presented. Acidogens, acetogens, CO2 reducing methanogens and acetoclastic methanogens are considered, the kinetics related to the first three populations depending on molecular hydrogen concentration. The model takes into account the complex interactions between the physico‐chemical and the biological components and can simulate digester operation both in steady state and transient conditions. The former are obtained by a simple analytical solution.
