Abstract

This paper describes the design and manufacturing tasks of a force sensor for its integration on the standard probe of a Coordinate Measuring Arm (AACMM or CMA). The sensor design is based on the use of strain gauges located on the surface of the CMA hard probe. The strain gauges as well as their cables and connectors have been protected with a custom case, made by Additive Manufacturing techniques (Polyjet 3D). The same method has been selected to manufacture an ergonomic handle that includes a trigger and the electronic components (customized PCB) required for synchronizing the trigger signal when probing occurs. The force sensor is finally connected and commanded by a signal monitoring software given a real-time force measurement.
