Abstract

Background: Well trained and well-educated nurses are cornerstone in patient safety and respiratory nurses are no exception. Respiratory care for patients with acute and chronic respiratory diseases require the ability to identify deterioration, administrate complex therapies and make independent clinical judgement. However, no existing research has identified respiratory nurses9 core competencies and thereby educational needs. Aims and objectives: To optimize respiratory patient care and -safety we aim to identify the core competencies in respiratory nursing and develop a core competency-based curriculum to meet the educational needs. Method: A nationwide three round Delphi study using Kern9s six steps of curriculum development as a framework. Results: The study will by July 2022 result in a nationwide consensus on a core competency-based curriculum for respiratory nurses. These results can provide the basis for a future educational program for respiratory nurses. Conclusions: It is the authors’ hope and intention that this study will generate interest and thus attention to the need for a consensus based respiratory education, both national and international. Therefore, this study has the potential for national and international impact on the education of respiratory nurses.
