Abstract

Competency-based orientation programs are recommended by most accrediting agencies. Programs must be developed that meet both national and institutional requirements, while also encompassing the unique knowledge that each orientee brings to the practice setting. They should also be flexible enough to account for the unique needs of the institution. This session focused on the development of a competency-based orientation program for new and experienced registered nurses entering the CCL/radiology areas. This session was designed for nurse managers, clinical nurse specialists, clinicians, and staff involved in the orientation process. Although specific to the CCL/radiology area, this process can be adapted for use in many settings. At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to (1) identify the necessary components of a competency-based orientation program, (2) determine the general and hospital-specific competencies required to function in the CCL/radiology department, (3) describe methods to develop, organize, and assimilate necessary educational resources and tools, (4) discuss steps for successful implementation of the orientation program, and (5) identify orientation evaluation methods.
