Abstract

Fabrication of new cables of robust mechanical and electrical properties allows magnet designers more flexibility in magnet designs than being restricted to using collider dipole Inner (30 strand, 0.808 mm strand diameter) and Outer (36 strand, 0.648 mm strand diameter) cables for all SSC magnets. A set of relationships to predict cable dimensional parameters has been developed based on a series of 10 Rutherford cables used in High Energy Physics (HEP) applications and existing guidelines from BNL. It was found that HEP cable designs’ dimensional parameters can be closely predicted from the number of strands and the strand diameter. However, variations in the keystone angle (i.e. major and minor edge thickness) exist between different cable designs due to attempts in accommodating respective magnet designs. Since these cables in use are supposedly virtually optimized, the derived relationships are expected to hold for a very broad range of cables with differing strand diameters and number of strands in the cables.
