Abstract

A static var compensator was developed using a light-triggered thyristor (LTT) with a self-protection function. This paper describes the development of 200-Mvar class thyristor switched capacitors (TSCs) type with LTTs, which are useful for the recovering system voltage after an AC system fault. However, protection of the TSC is achieved not by the self-protection function of the LTT but by an arrester. Therefore, protection coordinated with the arrester is also described. Moreover, the effectiveness of the TSC with the coordinated protection was demonstrated by a simulator test. Finally, the manufacture and operating record of large-capacity SVCs are shown.
