Abstract

An individual's participation in school, it is argued, can be analysed on four levels—the individual, the team, inter-team coordination and the management of the school's interaction with the environment. These levels represent different intensities of participation and levels of complexity in the commitment of the individual. This paper explores each of these levels and also inter-level dynamics which entail that an intervention at any one level will have effects at the other levels, with attendant consequences for the management of change.
