Abstract

Abstract : THOR-NT is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Advanced Frontal Impact Dummy. GESAC, Inc., in cooperation with NHTSA and Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), has developed the Articulated Total Body (ATB) model for the THOR-NT dummy. ATB is a rigid-body dynamics simulation program. The ATB THOR-NT model consists of 21 segments coupled by 20 joints. Segment mass properties, joint mechanical properties, and surface contact properties were modeled from test data collected through quasi-static and dynamic tests. A set of ATB simulations were developed for the THOR-NT certification tests. The results were compared and analyzed. The simulations reproduced the test responses reasonably well. This work demonstrated that ATB model can serve as an effective preliminary assessment tool for studies involving THOR-NT dummy.
