Abstract

Objective: develop and validate an instrument to characterize sociodemographic aspects, health conditions and care among elderly grandchild carers. Method:  methodological study performed by active search on studies and instruments with the proposed theme, construction and validation of content, reliability and semantics of the instrument items. Results: the total Content Validity Index of the instrument, after validation by the judges, was 0.93%, which means that the content of the instrument makes it possible to measure what it proposes to measure. As for the reliability of the instrument, it presented an Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of 0.87 (95%CI 0.72 - 0.96), indicating that there is excellent stability of continuous variables. Cronbach's alpha presented a value of α=0.867, revealing the instrument's internal consistency. Brainstorming indicated that the items are easy to understand, with no major doubts on the part of the pilot group. Conclusion: The proposed instrument was developed and validated, and can contribute to the practice of professionals and researchers by unveiling the care relations between grandparents and grandchildren, besides supporting the development of public policies.
