Abstract

Development and structure of seeds in Crotalaria verrucosa L. and structure of mature seeds in Spartium junceum L. and Ulex europaeus L. have been studied. Mature seed-coat consists of 4 to 5 layers of cells and is distinguishable into an outermost layer of macrosclereids followed by a layer of osteosclereids. This layer is underlain by 2 to 3 layers of parenchymatous cells. The hilar region comprises counter-palisade and palisade layers, tracheid bar and parenchymatous cells filled with tanniniferous substance. A single layer of endosperm persists in mature seeds. Mature embryo occupies almost entire area of the seed and hypocotyl-root-axis is shorter than the cotyledons. SEM studies of seed-coat surface shows tuberculate pattern in C. verrucosa and rugulate in S. junceum and U. europaeus. Systematic significance of seed structure has been discussed.
