Abstract

Summary Development and structure of seeds in Vigna unguiculata W alp . and anatomy of mature seeds in Pueraria phasealaides B enth ., P. tuberasa DC. and Teramnus labialis S preng . have been studied. Mature seed coat consists of a layer of both macrosclereids and osteosclereids. This layer is underlain by 3 to 4 layers of parenchymatous cells. The hilar region comprises counter palisade and palisade layers, tracheid bar and parenchymatous cells filled with tanniniferous substance. The endosperm is completely consumed in V. unguiculata but in Pueraria species and T. labialis 1-3 layers of endosperm persist in mature seeds. Mature embryo occupies almost entire length of the seed and hypocotyl-root-axis is much shorter than the cotyledons. SEM studies of seed coat shows reticulate (V. unguiculata, P. phasealaides) and rugulate (P. tuberasa, T. labialis) patterns. Systematic significane of seed structure has been discussed.
