Abstract

The authors describe the evolution of the design for a microwave instrumentation system which has been developed to measure the complex permittivity of high loss liquids such as water from 50 to 75 GHz in the temperature interval 20 to 30 degrees C with a 1 sigma precision of approximately 1%. This system uses a variable length multimodal reflection sample cell. A discussion is given of the experimental problems that were encountered during this development process and the solutions that were introduced for their resolution. The methodology that was developed to assess the performance of this instrument system is detailed and examples of its application are given.
