Abstract

Approaches to the extension of partially stabilized Zirconia (PSZ) crystals practicality, as well as the possibility of using related melt processing to produce improved polycrystalline PSZ materials, are investigated. Attention is given to laser welding and laser surface treatment methods for PSZ crystals, which have shown little promise, as well as arc melting, and induction melting/press-forging. Also cited are the reasons, such as high elastic anisotropy, for the reduction of strength with grain size increases. Progress is noted in the fabrication of PSZ particles by molten droplet solidification the finer grain size thus obtained may be useful in precipitate-toughened PSZ polycrystals. 14 references.
