Abstract
Recognizing that the health and appear ance of the police force were important for a good public image and staff morale, the Police Chief of the Austin Police Depart ment (APD) authorized the formation of a wellness program with a nutrition compo nent. The staff physician/health director at APD contacted us, and plans were made for a twelve-month nutrition program. The ob jectives of the nutrition program were to de crease weight, total cholesterol and triglyc eride levels, and to increase high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels of the participants.
