Abstract

Recognizing that the health and appear­ ance of the police force were important for a good public image and staff morale, the Police Chief of the Austin Police Depart­ ment (APD) authorized the formation of a wellness program with a nutrition compo­ nent. The staff physician/health director at APD contacted us, and plans were made for a twelve-month nutrition program. The ob­ jectives of the nutrition program were to de­ crease weight, total cholesterol and triglyc­ eride levels, and to increase high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels of the participants.
