Abstract

1 HIS STUDY WAS DESIGNED to investigate the effectiveness of teaching conceptual understanding of the basic elements of music to students majoring in elementary education. The basic elements, as used here, were pitch, duration, intensity, and timbre. Conceptual understanding was defined as the ability to identify aurally, to generalize, and to discriminate among these elements in various contextual structures. The study further proposed to analyze the relationship between a subjects's conceptual understanding and his musical, verbal, and mathematical aptitudes.
