Abstract

This paper reports the efficiency of the C 30 phase for HPLC and TLC separation of a mixture of tocopherol homologs and α -tocopherol acetate, in comparison with C 18 and unmodified silica gel. The C 30 TLC plates were prepared by the modification of silica gel plates with triacontyltrichlorosilane, using different ratios of the modifying agent. The novel TLC plates were characterized by use of 13 C and 29 Si solid-state cross-polarization magic-angle spinning (CP/MAS) NMR spectroscopy, which furnished detailed information about the structure of the resulting surface species, the chain order, and the mobility of the alkyl chain moiety. Chromatographic results showed these new TLC phases can be used for rapid separation of a tocopherol mixture. These new plates could therefore be of great interest for rapid, high-throughput screening.
