Abstract

Abstract An important element in fracture control and fracture evaluation of engineering structures is the knowledge of representative material properties. The Mechanical Research Department of Ontario Hydro has a continuing experimental program to determine fatigue properties of secondary pressure boundary materials used in nuclear generating stations. This paper presents the following related experimental projects: 1. Fatigue crack growth in A516 Gr-70 steel (low carbon boiler plate steel for high temperature use). 2. Fatigue threshold stress intensity factor determination of A106B steel. 3. Growth of very small fatigue cracks and crack propagation at notches. 4. Growth of surface fatigue cracks in A516 Gr-70 steel. Application of material data to determine fatigue life is also discussed.
