Abstract

This chapter argues that approaches to school leadership that emphasize devolved leadership and team work are not only advisable but essential in an era when innovation and change mean that no one person can carry forward a school or school system on their own. The chapter draws on extensive research into the leadership development needs of school leaders at all levels and offers both a conceptual analysis of the reasons why devolved leadership and team work is advantageous and practical strategies that help to forge leadership teams in order to enhance school effectiveness. In so doing the chapter addresses topics such as creating the learning organisation through team work; motivating teams; balancing teams roles; balancing the concern for classroom and team roles; and the ways in which high-performing teams can be maintained. It is suggested that the Principal and other senior leaders play a key role in interconnecting the various elements that facilitate high-quality leadership learning and team development.
