Abstract

The chapter then discusses lessons emerging from health promotion strategies which do aim to tackle inequality in Black and minority ethnic communities, drawing upon work that has been developed in Sandwell and focusing on the Smethwick Heart Action Research Project. This project has set out to document the health experience of these communities, opening up the links between poverty, racism and health and highlighting gaps in service provision. The project has also encouraged the participation of voluntary organizations and community groups in determining appropriate methods for health promotion. However, its initiatives too emerge as subject to current constraints on health promotion.
