Abstract

Almost two decades have passed since the role of clinical nurse specialist (CNS) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was first recognised and developed to improve the quality of care, education and support to patients with IBD ( Phillips, 1995 ). The role of IBD CNS is now pivotal within the multidisciplinary IBD team. UK national IBD standards ( IBD Standards Group, 2009 ) and the RCN role descriptives document ( RCN, 2007 ) have resulted in greater clarity of the IBD CNS’s roles and responsibilities. In this article, Kathy Whayman, Cath Stansfield, Julie Duncan and Marian O’Connor explore the role in relation to wider definitions of advanced nursing practice, looking at preparation for practice and characteristics of the CNS role. In addition to role clarity, education, support from colleagues, networking and research evidence are all vital for nurses to establish and deliver effective specialist services for people with IBD.
