Abstract

Summary The discussion of placebos in physiotherapy is affected by limited understanding of the size of the placebo effect in research and the lack of research specific to physiotherapy. The ethics of placebo use in physiotherapy research and clinical practice need to be debated fully. It is possible to use what is known of placebos to maximise treatment effect without ethical compromise, but the profession has yet to develop a model of placebos and ethics relevant to its own clinical practice.
