Abstract
To develop a valid and reliable research instrument displaying six basic emotions represented by three ethnic groups (Asian, white British, and black African-Caribbean) and both genders, to assess ability to identify emotions from non-verbal displays. A DVD was made by professional actors. Validity was assessed using two panels of qualified and practising health practitioners in mental health. Reliability was assessed using Cohen's kappa. The instrument was found to be a valid representation of the six basic emotions and a reliable tool to assess emotion recognition. A new research instrument has been produced to assess participants' ability to identify correctly emotions displayed by non-verbal communication.
