Abstract
This paper discusses the role of information in technology transfer and presents key findings from research on the information needs and communication patterns of scientists and engineers. Implications of this research for the design and management of scientific and technical information (STI) systems, including both libraries and computerized systems, are discussed. ACTIS, a computerized information system being developed to promote technology transfer in the field of tribology, is described. ACTIS is an example of a system that has been designed with the information needs and communication patterns of scientists and engineers in mind. The paper concludes with suggestions for information specialists who are trying to promote technology transfer in their organizations.
