Abstract

It has become a truism of much of the literature around schooling that parental engagement in learning is a vital part of narrowing the achievement gap between children from different backgrounds, and for good reasons. It is important to be clear about what is meant by ‘parental engagement in children's learning'. Parental involvement in school and schooling is focused on the school and remains the domain of teaching staff. The new school leadership team identified improving parent relations as a catalyst for improving pupil standards and school development. The defining action for developing parental involvement and eventually parental engagement at our school was the appointment of a full-time Family Engagement Officer.
