Abstract

English proficiency among Thais was always cited at low level despite the country being famous for tourism and growing international trade. Lack of opportunity to practice the language was often quoted by many students while some showed different attitude in learning English and were successful in mastering the language within their university years. The excuse of not having opportunity might not be the real reason. This study sought to investigate the problems hindering students’ language proficiency development and possibilities for students to enhance their English language skills. The research used qualitative approach utilizing structured in-depth interview with 35 respondents at St. Theresa International College. The findings indicated that, for students, self-motivation, attitude, exposure to English language usage and time management were the key factors that made the difference in learning the language. For teachers, choosing the right teaching materials, appropriate training, understanding Thai culture and receiving support from the administration were the key for enhancing students’ language learning.
