Abstract

This article explores the human resource practices in operation within the convention and exhibition industry in Australia. Issues that relate to staff retention and associated strategies used by the sector to address labour turnover and staff shortages are investigated. Through a series of in depth qualitative interviews empirical research is collected from nine managers in the industry in Australia. Themes explored are employee recruitment and selection, staff retention, learning and development strategies, staff motivation and workplace management practices. Findings illustrate a range of contemporary strategies that employers have implemented. Conclusions are presented for the further development of the research.
