Abstract
Introduction: The University of Chicago Aeromedical Network (UCAN) flight team is an intensive care patient service that uses air and ground patient transportation to provide complex emergency care to neonatal, pediatric and adult, critically ill or injured patients. UCAN patient transport teams consist of specialized nurses and an emergency medicine resident or nurse practitioner. Due to the unpredictable nature of the transport environment and the limited resources available while on scene, flight nurses have the responsibility and accountability beyond traditional hospital nursing positions. The team often uses specialized equipment, specialized clinical skills and independent decision making to support the patient during transport.
