Developing Advanced CFL Learners’ Academic Writing Skills: Theory and Practice

Abstract

For truly advanced learners of the Chinese language, training in Chinese academic writing has numerous benefits: It brings depth to the teaching content, improves students’ overall ability to use the language, and more importantly, enhances their analytical and research skills as well as critical thinking skills. It is therefore worth exploring how to fully recognize the importance of teaching Chinese academic writing and integrate an academic writing component into an advanced Chinese language curriculum. The first part of this chapter reviews the current literature on Chinese writing pedagogy at the advanced level. The second part argues for the importance of including academic writing instruction in advanced-level Chinese courses. The third part discusses the instructional design of a writing curriculum and various pedagogical practices to support the development of students’ academic writing skills.KeywordsWriting pedagogyAdvanced ChineseAcademic writing, Curriculum design
