Abstract

This paper addresses the recent initiatives by the Singapore government to foster a thinking culture within the students in the local universities. Based on recent research on learning theories, critical and creative thinking, emotional intelligence, and the development of initiatives set by the local government, we have made suggestions for changes in the infrastructure and curriculum in the university. We emphasize the notion of creating a culture of thinking within the primary, secondary, junior college, and tertiary education, before students can be enculturated to think and learn in the university context. The significance of promoting thinking and learning is discussed and how such skills and dispositions would be of imperative significance to the nation's survival and growth towards a developed status.
