Abstract

In this chapter I provide an overview of some of the major issues that must be considered in developing a theory of language acquisition. I begin by discussing the relationship between theories of grammar and theories of mind. Here the modularity hypothesis is argued for. This leads to a discussion of the influence of philosophy on theories of acquisition. Both empiricist and rationalist accounts of acquisition of knowledge are considered.
