Abstract

Summary Acquisition of land resource data for land use planning has generally been by specific purpose surveys, few of which provide comparable data. The feasibility study for an ecological survey of Australia conducted by the Division of Land Use Research, CSIRO provides a statewide land resources data base which is suitable for use in a computer data storage and retrieval system. Survey methodology includes the use of satellite imagery, standardized descriptors and a hierarchy of environmental areas to provide rapid mapping and description of Australian environments. The utility of this data base and the capacity of the state government to use it are now being evaluated.
