Abstract

Interventional endoscopy has developed significantly due to technical innovations. The development of sophisticated technologies and accessories now allows for an increased array of interventional procedures. As endoscopy has evolved, the skills required of the workforce have changed. Nursing competence in operating interventional accessories is central to providing quality care and maximising patient outcomes. While working as a clinical nurse manager, the author identified variations in skills among endoscopy staff nurses and limitations to providing the necessary learning opportunities. It was acknowledged that there were similar challenges in various endoscopy units throughout Ireland. After discussion with the nursing staff and consultant endoscopists, it was agreed there was a need to develop a dedicated, practical, hands-on interventional endoscopy course to support the training needs and professional competence of nursing staff. Following the development and delivery of the first interventional endoscopy training course for nurses in Ireland, the feedback was extremely positive. All nurses stated that the course helped them to improve their knowledge and develop their skills. This feedback supported the need for ongoing professional development of all nurses in the speciality, regardless of their experience, as endoscopy nursing evolves.
