Abstract
The study of lithic assemblages from Pakistan and India has shown that pressure débitage and heat treatment of raw material during the production of débitage were often associated techniques. This was well-established in a large part of the Sub-continent from the Neolithic onwards. The use of heat-treatment does not appear to have been common in flint industries but seems to have been closely related to the micro-fibrous varieties of silicia used in pressure débitage and ornament production. Heat treatment is still in use for the production of carnelian beads.
