Abstract

The article presents the results of a survey analyzing the students’ knowledge about the State of the Teutonic Order in Prussia and its material heritage in the Region of Warmia and Mazury. The unique role played by the Teutonic Order in European history and the successful preservation of its material and cultural heritage deserve educational efforts to raise awareness about local history in the Region of Warmia and Mazury. In 2016–2017, a questionnaire survey was conducted in secondary schools in the Region of Warmia and Mazury. A total of 555 questionnaires were filled by students in all counties of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship where Teutonic structures and other elements of the order’s material and cultural heritage have been preserved to this day. The students’ knowledge of local history was surveyed in three categories: knowledge of historical facts, events and dates; understanding of historical processes; knowledge and understanding of historical, material and cultural heritage. The results of the survey were interpreted, and the relevant conclusions were formulated in the last part of the article.
