Abstract

Absolute cross sections for the elastic scattering reaction 28Si(d, d) 28Si have been measured from 25° to 140° at six energies in the range E d = 4.74 MeV to E d = 5.26 MeV. The distribution of protons from the l n = 0 reaction 28Si(d, p) 29Si g.s. and the l n = 2 reactions 28Si(d, p) 29Si ∗ 1.28 and 2.03 has been obtained at E d = 5.0 MeV as well as the polarization of the ground state proton group. These data have been compared with predictions of DWBA theory using deuteron optical-model parameter sets obtained by fitting the elastic distributions. The theory is unable to explain the polarization data, but some of the deuteron potentials provide fair agreement with the measured stripping distributions. Spectroscopic factors have been extracted and compared with the predictions of the Nilsson model for 28Si.
