Abstract The production of the cosmic abundance of deuterium by high-energy spallation reactions is examined. The large energy requirements and the concomitant production of other nuclei and gamma-rays impose severe constraints on this sort of mechanism. Violent pregalactic events, which might occur shortly after recombination or in early quasarlike objects, are found to be possible sites for deuterium production. Some constraints on the origin of the diffuse gamma-ray background also are obtained.
