Abstract

The paper describes a deterministic stability analysis together with a sensitivity analysis of slopes in heavily jointed rock mass with planar, circular or combined modes of failure. This approach is based on the modified Sarma method of analysis in which the strength parameters are derived from the rock mass classification (RMR) system and applied to the Hoek and Brown Rock failure criterion. The results of the analysis are presented as a plot of factor of safety ( F), against acceleration ( K), which shows the effect of vibrations (blasting, earthquake, etc.) and acceleration on the factor of safety of slopes. The paper also considers the influence of various strength parameters on the factor of safety and the acceleration K. Application of this technique is illustrated with the aid of an example of a slope in an iron ore mine.
