Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of particle size on coal flotation in terms of kinetic parameters such as flotation rate constant and maximum recovery. Six different flotation kinetic models were applied to data from tests using the MATLAB statistical analysis tool package to estimate the relationship between the flotation rate constant, the maximum combustible value recovery, and the particle size. Within the size range studied, the best flotation performance was obtained at −75 + 25 µ size fractions. The result shows that all kinetic models except the second-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities gave an excellent fit to the experimental data at various size fractions. From the statistical analysis, we conclude that coal flotation with combustible matter recovery as the response can be described with the first-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities, .
