Abstract

The signal strength measurement threshold is an important parameter for designing a decision algorithm to determine which network a communication device should connect to. The signal strength value usually defined by hardware chipset manufacturer and this is a challenge when the actual strength power does not actually represent the field measurement values. In these preliminary studies, we propose a mean RSSI values based on practical research experiment as well as by standard document such as IEEE802.11. The field work measurement RSSI was determined from monitoring the signal strength of WSN device at aquafarming location. The studies were conducted to investigate the signal strength coverage behaviour for three local Internet Service Providers (ISPs). We have found that specific provider showedsignificant signal strength of more than 19 dBm as compared with the rest. However, one network provider will not be able to support all cellular networks from 2G to 4G. The outcomes form the basis for our future development of cognitive network selection prototype for wireless sensor network communication.
