Abstract

The paper presents a study on calculating optimum gear ratios of mechanical driven systems using a three stage bevel helical gearbox and a chain drive. An optimization problem in which the system cross section area was chosen as the objective function was solved. In addition, 6 input parameters including the total system ratio, the allowable contact stress, the face width coefficients of the bevel and the helical gear sets, and the output torque were taken into account. To evaluate the impacts of these factors on the optimum gear ratios, a simulation experiment was designed and performed. From the results of the optimization problem, the effects of the input parameters on the optimum ratios were estimated and some equations to calculate the optimum gear ratios were proposed.
