Abstract

The best feeding method for infants during the rst few months of life is exclusively breastfeeding, which has signicant advantages for both mothers and their infants. Despite all of its advantages, exclusive breastfeeding is very low and there is little knowledge about the determining factors, particularly from slum areas. The objective was to determine what percentage of lactating mothers in urban slum practice exclusive breastfeeding and estimate its prevalence and identify the obstacles to exclusive breastfeeding in Jamnagar, Gujarat's urban slums. Methods-A cross-sectional study was conducted among 420 lactating mothers for a period of six months in the urban slums of Jamnagar. Results- The prevalence found in our study for exclusive breastfeeding was 59.76%. Conclusion- Insufcient maternal secretions (48.52%), an inverted or sore nipple (21.89%), and early introduction of formula or additional lacteal feeds for the baby's growth were the biggest barriers to exclusive breastfeeding in this study. 17.16% of working women cited their jobs as the reason for early weaning.
