Abstract

The analysis of high resolution uranium spectra occasionally reveals inconsistent enrichment fractions too large to be explained by stochastic uncertainties. This is particularly noticeable for depleted and highly enriched samples. To clarify this, we use a linear combination of library spectra to model the Kα region between 88 keV and 101 keV. We find, that the inconsistencies are best explained by systematic errors regarding the continuum background, the width of the detector’s response function and the intensity ratio of the self fluorescence peaks. While the true shape of the background can only be approximated, a careful calibration of the detector’s response function and the correct intensity ratio of the Kα1 and Kα2 self fluorescence peaks can help to reduce systematic errors, especially those affecting the net peak area of the 235U peak at 93.352 keV.
