Abstract

An analytical procedure has been developed and demonstrated for the isomer specific determination of 41 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in wet and dry atmospheric deposition. A combination of solid phase and liquid extraction was used to produce a concentrated crude extract, which was purified and fractionated using open column liquid chromatography before analysis using gas chromatography — mass spectrometry with stable isotope dilution calibration. Analysis of preliminary atmospheric deposition samples collected over a 30-day period gave measurements in the following ranges: PCDDs and PCDFs — 15–1420 pg; PCBs — 0.3–109 ng; and PAHs — 0.02–2.72 μg.
