Abstract
The results of determination of serum hyaluronidase activity in the presence of β-glucuronidase and N- acetyl-β- d- grucosaminidase by a method precluding the synergic action of exoglycosidases, are described. A group of normal adults and of patients with various diseases of connective tissue have been examined. In the nonactive phase of rheumatic disease the activity of the three glycosaminoglycan hydrolases was somewhat higher than normal. In the active phase of the disease the increase in the level of the serum enzymes correlated with the degree of activity of the pathological process. An increase in activity, similarly directed, but more distinctly expressed quantitatively, was observed to occur with these enzymes at different stages of the disease in systemic lupus erythematosus. Determination of activity of hyaluronidase, in the presence and absence of a β-glucuronidase inhibitor revealed the activity of the former to depend on the activity of exoglycosidases, a fact correlating with the clinical and laboratory signs of the disease.
