Abstract

The trueζ potential of the particles of powdered Pyrex glass in contact with dilute solutions of NaCl has been determined by applying surface conductivity correction with the help of the equation 1/ζa=1/ζ+α/ζ (Kp−S)/S whereζa represent the apparent electrokinetic potential calculated from the electro-osmotic data bySmoluchowski equation,ζ the true eleetrokinetic potential,α- a constant for the diaphragm under the experimental condition of packing,Kp the specific conductivity of the liquid inside the diaphragm andS its specific conductivity in bulk. At a constant value ofS−a linear relationship between 1/ζa and (Kp−S) is observed and from the intercept of the straight line on 1/ζa axis- the value of trueζ has been calculated. The values of trueζ thus found for different concentrations of NaCl are in agreement with those of Pyrex capillary tubes in contact with the comparable concentrations of other electrolytes.
