Determination of the Sterile Dose of Gamma Irradiation for Adult Mediterranean Fruit Fly Ceratitis capitata Wied. in Egypt

Abstract

AbstractFemale medflies resulting from pupae irradiated with 4000 r of gamma irradiation did not lay eggs even when mated to normal males. On the other hand, normal females when mated to 4000 r irradiated males laid normal number of eggs with an average percentage of egg hatchability of 1.12% (the control percentage of hatchability being 84.53%). The same behavioural pattern was observed in females receiving 6000 r in the pupal stage but the egg hatchability decreased to 0.39% (the control being 81.27%).Since 4000 r induced almost complete sterility in males and inhibition of oviposition in females without affecting their longevity, this dose may be considered as the sterilizing dose of what might be an Egyptian strain of Ceratitis capitata Wied. When applying this sterilizing dose (4000 r) fractionated to investigate the possibility of repairing radiation damage in the time elapsed between the fractions, it was found that such repairs did not take place and sterility was not changed.ZusammenfassungBeziehung des Stralen‐Quantums zur Sterilisation adulter Mittelmeer‐Fruchtfliegen (Ceratitis capitata Wied.) in Ägypten♀‐Fruchtfliegen, die aus mit 4000‐r‐Gammabestrahlung behandelten Puppen hervorgingen, legten auch nach Kopulation mit normalen ♂♂ keine Eier ab. Andererseits legten normale ♀♀ nach Kopulation mit ♂♂, die aus strahlenbehandelten Puppen gleicher Dosis entstanden, die normale Zahl an Eiern ab, von denen jedoch nur 1,1 % (84,5% in Kontrolle) schlüpften. Ein ähnliches Ergebnis wurde nach Bestrahlung der Puppen mit 6000 r erzielt. Hier sank das Schlüpfprozent der Eier auf 0,31%. Somit genügt die Gammabestrahlung der Puppen mit 4000 r für eine fast vollständige Sterilisierung des äygyptischen Stammes der Mittelmeer‐Fruchtfliege, ohne deren Lebensdauer zu beeinflussen. Versuche mit intermittierenden kurzzeitigen Bestrahlungen ergaben denselben Effekt.
