Abstract

The Hildebrand solubility parameters of five allyl imidazolium (AIM)-based ionic liquids (ILs) were investigated by inverse gas chromatography (IGC) technique in the temperatures range of 303.15 to 333.15 K. The Hildebrand solubility parameters of five AIM-based ILs were determined as δ2([AMIM]Cl) = 26.88 (J·cm−3)0.5, δ2([AEIM]Cl) = 26.75 (J·cm−3)0.5, δ2([ABIM]Cl) = 26.70 (J·cm−3)0.5, δ2([AMIM]Br) = 25.24 (J·cm−3)0.5 and δ2([AMIM]I) = 23.93 (J·cm−3)0.5 by extrapolation at 298.15 K. Twenty-one solvents with different chemical natures and polarities were used to obtain the miscibility between the ILs and the solvents by IGC technique, including the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters and the weight fraction activity coefficient. In addition, Hansen Solubility Parameter in Practice (HSPiP) software was used to calculate the Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) of five AIM-based ILs at 298.15 K. The results were δt([AMIM]Cl) = 26.90 (J·cm−3)0.5, δt([AEIM]Cl) = 26.77 (J·cm−3)0.5, δt([ABIM]Cl) = 26.72 (J·cm−3)0.5, δt([AMIM]Br) = 25.31 (J·cm−3)0.5 and δt([AMIM]I) = 23.99 (J·cm−3)0.5. The results were similar and consistent with the Hildebrand solubility parameter determined by IGC.
