Abstract

The field and temperature dependence of the Gd moment in Pd 0.98Fe 0.01Gd 0.01 was determined by neutron scattering methods. The observed behavior is consistent with a B 7 2 ( x) dependence with a Pd-Gd exchange constant of -0.018 eV. This exchange constant in a simple molecular field model accounts for the existing magnetization data for paramagnetic Pd Gd alloys and suggest a negative spontaneous Pd polarization for the ferromagnetic alloys that can be reversed in high magnetic fields.
