Abstract

At the Azerbaidzhan Institute of Petroleum Machinery a new design of grabs was worked out; they have a gripping device made in the form of a spiral. On the basis of analytical investigations a method was worked out for determining the optimum parameters of the designs and of the load capacity of the grabs. A diagram of the state of stress and strain on the section of the pipe and the grab is shown. On the basis of the test results it may be concluded that the design of the new pipe grab satisfied the basic requirements facing modern borehole gripping devices; it has a high load capacity, the grip can be released, and the gripped column of pipes can be rotated inside the borehole.
