Abstract

Calculations have been made of the optimum size of the field of view and spacing between observations to be made by a satellite—borne infrared scanning radiometer observing the stratosphere as a function of instrumental noise level. It is shown that unavoidably the TIROS N Stratospheric Sounding Unit does not use the optimum size and spacing of the fields of view, but it is suggested that taking means of 2 × 2 groups of observations after they have been made will result in an improved representation of the radiance field. Although the calculations described in this paper have been made specifically for a radiometer in an orbit similar to that planned for the TIROS N spacecraft, the principle of the method is general and can be adopted for radiometers in different orbits.
